Short answer: every serious rental agency in Tunisia asks for a refundable deposit. With Rent A Car Tunisia (reservations.tn) it is €500 for a small car, €700 for an SUV, saloon or 7-seater, and €3,000 for a premium car. You pay it at pickup in cash (dinars or euros), by card (a debit card works) or by bank transfer, and you get it back when you return the car undamaged. You don't need a credit card to book, and nothing is frozen on a card for weeks.

Can I rent a car in Tunisia without a deposit?

Honestly, no, not from an agency you should trust. The deposit covers the damage excess: without it, the agency carries all the risk, so an offer "with no deposit" usually means a higher price, an older car, or a contract you will regret. We don't offer it, and we would rather tell you before you land.

What we do offer is a deposit that is lower than the big international brands and that you can pay the way that suits you.

How much is the deposit?

CarDeposit
Small car (Hyundai i10, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris)€500
SUV, saloon, 7 or 9 seats (MG ZS, VW Virtus, Chery Tiggo 8)€700
Premium (Mercedes, BMW)€3,000

For comparison, international brands commonly block €1,000 to €3,500 on a credit card in the main driver's name.

4 ways to pay it

  1. Cash in dinars at pickup.
  2. Cash in euros at pickup: handy if you arrive with euros and don't want to change money at the airport.
  3. By card: debit or credit card.
  4. By bank transfer before you arrive: ask on WhatsApp for the details and how it will be returned, before you pay.

Whichever you choose, ask for a written receipt with the amount.

What the deposit covers

Basic insurance (third-party) is included in every rental. The deposit is the excess: if the car comes back with new damage, the cost of the repair is taken from the deposit, up to its amount, and the rest is given back. If there is no new damage, you get the full amount back at the return.

How to get the full deposit back

  • At pickup, walk round the car with the agent and take photos and a video of every side, the wheels, the windscreen and the fuel gauge.
  • Return the car on time and with the same fuel level.
  • In case of an accident, even a small one, call the agency right away and fill in an accident report (constat) with the other driver.
  • Keep the agency's WhatsApp number to send photos if anything happens on the road.
